For the new Axess motors brand commercial, we chose to focus on the special moments people experience in cars. We wanted to be outside the cars looking in, but using static vehicles was not option.

In order to achieve our vision, we would need a consistent camera move on a moving vehicle, something that had never been done before. A modified russian arm could probably accomplish the shot, but we had neither the time nor the budget to import one.

The only solution was to build our own rig.
By creating a proxy of the rig in Cinema 4D, we were able to accuratley test multiple camera positions, rig dimensions, focal length, car models and traveling speeds in a short time. The previs was invaluable in calculating the technical specifications of the final rig.

The previs allowed us to make informed decisions regarding the ideal cutting points while travelling around each vehicle, this defined the action and duration of the scenes, which in turn influenced the length of each line in the script and determined where we would have the freedom to use J and L cuts.
The previs also showed us obstructions that the camera would face on each vehicle and allowed us to compensate with the action.
